The Cango Caves

A subterranean wonderland awaits visitors at the Cango Caves in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain Range. 26km from Oudtshoorn, the facilities at the Caves include a restaurant, a curio shop and a wheelchair friendly museum. The complex has been designed to allow access to wheelchairs on all levels. From having no stairs (only ramps) in the building to disabled toilet facilities and wider door frames, Cango Caves are one of South Africa’s 10 most-visited tourist attractions.

Two tour options, led by experienced, multilingual guides are available. An hour-long Standard Tour taking in 6 chambers. With a few stairs to climb and comfortable walkways, it is an enchanting trip to a seldom-seen world of majestic, glittering stalagmites, stalactites and helictites (limestone formations that grow in unusual directions)

The nine-metre high pillar known as Cleopatra’s Needle is at least 150 000 years old and the main cavern known as Van Zyl’s Chamber is 98 metres long, 49 metres wide and 15 metres high, with standing room for 2500 people.

Incorporating a challenging maze of crawlways the 90 minute Adventure Tour is for the fit and physically able visitor. High temperatures and humidity make light clothing and sturdy walking shoes essential
